The Rainforest Alliance
25 May 2008
The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It was founded by Daniel R. Katz and incorporated in the state of New York, U.S.A. in 1987. Katz and his tiny staff were determined to link the people in the tropics with the rest of the urban world. The twenty year anniversary of the organization demonstrated just how successful they were. The Rainforest Alliance now consists of a dozen offices world wide with more employees outside of the United States than inside. It is not unusual to find cocoa on the grocery shelves that was grown by the Chachi of Ecuador. Who knows if this would have ever happened without the hard work of the Alliance?
Unbridled and unsustainable growth of the agricultural industry has resulted in agriculture being the number one cause of ecosystem destruction. Agriculture takes up approximately one third of our planet’s total landscape; using more land and water than any other industry in the world. Deforestation and careless agrochemical use have resulted in the eradication of entire species of plants and animals. The secondary effect of unsustainable growth is registered on the farm owners and farm workers themselves, resulting in vicious cycles of poverty and the destruction of culture and society.
The Rainforest Alliance is currently working with the farmers, foresters and lodge owners in 56 countries. They provide them with the tools and know-how to ensure the responsible use of land and to improve their lives and livelihood while protecting wildlife habitats. This policy of teaching ‘sustainable’ agriculture has resulted in not only improvement in the lives of the people but in the farms being an integral part of the regional conservation initiatives. The Alliance created The Rainforest Alliance seal to assure consumers that the products they are receiving are not only top quality but are part of global improvement.
